What We Carry

The stories we tell ourselves weigh more than the facts.

Most of what we carry is not the event itself but the story we have wrapped around it. Two people can live through the same year and emerge with entirely different loads, because one keeps a ledger of grievances and the other keeps a list of things that turned out fine. The facts are fixed. The story is not. And the story, more often than we admit, is ours to write.
